Poliomyelitis (polio) is a viral infectious disease that spreads from person to person. Although 90% of the infected individuals don't experience any symptoms, 1% of the cases experience muscle weakness and acute flaccid paralysis due to virus entering the central nervous system. Polio vaccines weren't developed until around the 1950's, which prevent polio because once someone gets it, there is no cure. Once an individual is infected with polio, he/she can get into long-term rehabilitation, including physical therapy, braces, corrective shoes, and, in some cases, orthopedic surgery. external image 20polio.large1.jpg
